Holcim Visitor Workshop

Siggenthal · 2025 · Open competition
Holcim Visitor Workshop - exterior view of the semi-transparent photovoltaic glass pavilion in a wooded landscape

Rendering by G. Notari

A visitor workshop for Holcim's Siggenthal cement plant, conceived as a pure structure. Prefabricated CPC concrete elements are pushed to the edge of the technology's possibilities - large, interconnected volumes carried by unusually slender supports. The cores are cast in biochar concrete, an IPCC-recognised decarbonisation technology, with water circuits that also temper the interior. A filigree skin of semi-transparent photovoltaic panels wraps the whole, a deliberate counterpoint to the mineral mass within.

Mensa Berufsschulzentrum Nord - exterior corner view of the black timber-clad building at golden hour

© B. Gonzales

A new refectory and media library for the Berufsschulzentrum Nord in Darmstadt's Bürgerpark - a 43 × 43 m timber solitaire of roughly 2,400 m². A glulam grillage on a 3 × 3 m grid spans the dining halls and foyer, cantilevering some three metres for the upper balcony; a 15 cm cross-laminated slab ties it together. Winner of Best Architects 23 and shortlisted for the Heinze Architekten Award.

Hardturm Stadium - detailed hand-drawn ink section perspective through the stand and concourse

The new Hardturm stadium in Zürich (project "Ensemble") is a compact football arena for around 18,500 spectators, designed for a dense, close-to-the-pitch atmosphere. It anchors a new quarter that includes two 137 m residential towers and a housing cooperative. Home to FC Zürich and Grasshopper Club Zürich, it replaces the former Hardturm stadium demolished in 2008.
